
The latest data from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reveals a growing number of older students struggling with reading. According to Special Education Professor Jade Wexler, schools are facing challenges as more students need additional literacy support than the traditional tiered model can address. Wexler suggests evidence-based strategies, including vocabulary and comprehension practices, to strengthen tier-one instruction and support students in core subjects like English, science, social studies, and math.
鈥80% or more of our kids are qualifying for more supplemental intensive intervention, but there's no way that our schools can provide that level of intervention to the amount of kids who need it, just resource wise and time wise. The implications are really that we need to strengthen that tier one setting for these kids, since that is where they spend most of their day,鈥 she explains in an interview with Education Week.
