Keisha Allen, assistant professor of teacher education and professional development, spoke with The Diamondback about how eliminating or weakening the federal department could negatively impact numerous Prince George鈥檚 County Public School programs.
鈥淭he consequences of this order are that it will weaken public education and limit access to higher education, particularly for historically marginalized and excluded communities,鈥 Allen said.
While state and local governments already have authority over curricula and benchmark assessments, Allen emphasized that the Department of Education plays a critical role in maintaining equity and accountability nationwide. Another potential consequence of scaling back the department is the loss of funding for tracking student progress and evaluating educational policies.
