Topic: Cultural Relevance at Scale: The Effects of an Ethnic Studies Expansion
Ethnic Studies courses seek to provide educational experiences that are responsive to students of color and cultivate their ability to confront systemic social, racial, and economic inequities. K-12 Ethnic Studies courses have recently proliferated, particularly in California where Ethnic Studies will be a high school graduation requirement for the class of 2029-30. Despite rapid course growth, we lack evidence about the impact of long-term, large-scale implementation. This study evaluates the impacts of the course in a district-wide implementation from a Research Practice Partnership with an urban district in California. It also examines structural supports and instructional practices the district developed to sustain the program as it expanded.
