Graduate Programs for PK-12 Educators

The EdTerps Learning Academy鈥檚 PK-12 Educator Programs support certified classroom teachers, conditionally hired teachers, supporting services personnel, and paraeducators to advance their careers while working full-time in school settings. Through flexible and part-time learning options that feature in-person, online, and blended instruction, our PK-12 Educator programs are designed to advance the pedagogical content knowledge and careers of working PK-12 educators and instructional leads in Elementary Education, Math, STEM, TESOL, Dual-Language Education, Human Development, and more. Programming in this portfolio culminate in graduate degrees from the 糖心少女 College of Education, including M.Ed. and Graduate Certificates, as well as eligibility for certain Maryland MSDE certifications.

Conditionally hired teachers, supporting services personnel, and paraeducators may pursue an M.Ed. with eligibility for MSDE Initial Teacher Certification in Elementary Grades 1-6 through the CITE program.

Certified classroom teachers may pursue preparation to pass the Praxis exam and add the MSDE ESOL endorsement to an existing teaching certification through the TESOL PBC online or in-person programs.

M.Ed. in Elementary Education
Creative initiatives in teacher education

This program is for conditionally hired elementary teachers, supporting services personnel, and paraeducators seeking to earn their M.Ed. in Elementary Education and eligibility for MSDE Initial Elementary Teaching Certification while working full-time.

This program prepares students with the practices to effectively build relationships with culturally diverse students, to develop a repertoire of teaching skills and inclusive practices, to reflect on teaching through collaborative professional learning communities, and to employ teaching strategies based on sound theory and research.

Coursework focuses on the foundation for effective elementary planning, instruction, and assessment.

Learning happens in-person and online (blended) in the evening hours, during two years of continuous part-time enrollment.

M.Ed in Mathematics Education

This program is for certified elementary teachers.

This program prepares elementary teachers to become highly qualified middle grades mathematics teachers and leaders. Graduates will be prepared to take on  middle grades mathematics teaching positions as well as mathematics leadership positions in their school districts.

Coursework focuses on mathematics content, mathematics education, curriculum-based integrated content and pedagogy courses, as well as an action research.

Learning happens in-person at the Universities at Shady Grove once per week in the evenings in the fall and spring semesters, and three times per week in the summer. Students take one class per semester over 3 years.

M.Ed in STEM Education

This program is for certified elementary and middle school teachers.

This program prepares elementary and middle school teachers to develop philosophies regarding issues of authenticity, equity, and achievement in STEM.

Coursework focuses on relationships between science, engineering, and mathematics through a transdisciplinary approach to integrated STEM. Teachers in the program use cutting-edge technology tools to build a Professional Learning Network as they develop philosophies regarding issues of authenticity, equity, and achievement in STEM.

Learning happens at the new Biomedical Sciences & Engineering Building at the Universities at Shady Grove.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

This program is for individuals with a Bachelor's degree who are interested in teaching English, including

  • Educators wanting to learn about working with English learners in their content areas
  • Certified teachers seeking add-on endorsements in ESOL.
  • Educators who teach English in the U.S. or overseas.

This 12-credit program prepares students to pass the ESOL endorsement Praxis exam.

Course credits earned through this certificate program can be counted in the future toward an M.Ed. in TESOL at 糖心少女 College of Education.

Learning happens online through asynchronous instruction, with courses offered during six-week periods in Summer, Fall, and Spring (*an in-person version of this program is available to AACPS teachers)

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Dual Language Education

This program is for teachers and leaders in Dual Language Schools.

This 12-credit program enhances students' expertise in teaching multilingual learners.

Coursework focuses on educational equity for language minoritized learners, improvement of home-school connections, and pedagogies that foster native language maintenance, multilingualism, and biliteracy in DLE classrooms/programs. Students learn specialized characteristics and pedagogies associated with DLE programs, especially in the areas of research and scholarship regarding language acquisition and multilingualism.

Learning happens in-person or fully online over four semesters.
